LET’S TALK ABOUT SHODEN IN REIKI
Let’s talk about Shoden in Reiki. What is Shoden?
Shoden (初伝) is a Japanese term that translates to “first teachings”.
初 (Sho): Means first, beginning, or initial.
伝 (Den): Means transmission, teaching, or tradition.
In Reiki, Shoden is the first degree or first level of training. These are the foundational teachings of Reiki and, in my opinion, the most important level of all.
Why?
Before I go deeper into that, it is important to understand that Reiki is often taught in either three or four levels, depending on the teacher. The four-level system—which is the way I teach—includes:
Shoden
Chuden
Okuden
Shinpiden
Shoden is the foundation of Reiki training.
I like to think of Reiki training as building a house. Before a house can come to life, a strong foundation must first be built. That foundation is of utmost importance because it must sustain everything built upon it.
Without a solid foundation, the house—no matter how beautiful or impressive it appears—will not last. It will not withstand storms or heavy rain. It may look beautiful on the outside, but it lacks true stability.
When the foundation is strong and stable, however, the house has the opportunity to endure for a very long time. A good foundation creates protection and support for everything within it to thrive.
The same is true in Reiki practice.
So how do we create this beautiful foundation in Reiki?
We practice.
There is no way around it. We practice consistently.
And what does consistency mean? It means practicing daily.
Is it okay to miss a day or two? Absolutely. But in order to experience the true benefits of Reiki, practice must become part of your life.
So what does practice look like?
In Shoden, there are various practices designed to help you connect more deeply to yourself and to universal life force energy. These practices help cultivate a calmer, steadier center within.
Ultimately, the goal of Reiki practice is achieving inner peace.
It is from this peaceful state that the deepest healing can occur—both for ourselves and for others.
Many people view Reiki as something outside of themselves, but Reiki is really within us. We all have the ability to connect with this energy, but like anything meaningful, it requires cultivation.
If you are a Reiki practitioner offering healing work to others, it is essential to incorporate Reiki practice into your daily life. These practices help keep your mind clear and your channel open.
